A senior, a writer, a journalist, a decathlete…welcome Anjelica to the blogosphere. She might advise you when you get in trouble, go into your dance. Of course, that might be because she’s never seen me do the “coca-cola dance,” right?

Speaking of frightening thoughts, Doc, Mrs. Grimes, Mr. Kendrick, Mr. Suttle, and I (all the Pre-AP and AP English teachers) got together for dinner tonight, plotting new and evil schemes to deprive our students of their social lives. We also got to talk with representatives from the RAE program about college scholarship opportunities–to my freshmen who have already been asking about this: Keep asking. We’ll talk.

Decathletes: Please don’t forget to check the Acadec page from time to time–scores aren’t the only things I’m posting there.

In “baby related news,” still nothing to report–today at least. Amy and I may finally have a name we can agree on, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get it out of us… The “official” due date (which means nothing) is September 8th, and we’ve had all sorts of predictions and bets about when he’ll come. Amy thinks perhaps the 5th, but I’m putting my money on the 14th. He’ll be late (like his mother). Your guess???

On the subject of new names (she’ll hate me for this, I’m sure) Noemi Beltran is in need of a middle name. Seems her parents forgot to give her one. I’m officially opening the floor to suggestions. Only nice ones, please. She gets to choose the winner, and I’ll put up five bison bucks for a prize. Creative writing students are especially encouraged to participate.

In conclusion, the year seems finally off to a somewhat stable beginning, and I’m enjoying getting to know new faces while catching up with old ones. If you are one of the old ones and you haven’t found me yet, I’m in portable A, which is next to portable 21, and nowhere near portable B.

Blog on, Sunset. Blog on.

Thoughts on “The Breakfast”

At the end of his breakfast experience, the narrator says that he knows “some of the reasons why it was pleasant,” but he doesn’t list anything specifically. What do you think is on his mind? Ever had a memory etched forever in your mind–sight, sound, smell, everything?

Some thoughts on “Flight”

One of the principal questions Steinbeck (speaking through the character of Emilio) raises in the short story, “Flight,” is this: When does a boy become a man? Pepe Torres obviously thinks he already is a man. Mama Torres thinks he is a “foolish chicken.” What do you think?

Twelve: A Short Story by Neal Locke

I meant to post this much earlier, but as often happens, life and school got in the way. Each summer, I try to set aside a significant chunk of time to write–not for school, not even for Creative Writing, but just because I love to write. And because someday when I finally grow up, I wouldn’t mind being a professional science-fiction writer.

This short story, Twelve, represents the bulk of the writing I did this summer. It is my first attempt at a story that is not specifically targeted to the young adult market, although some young adults might find it of interest.

It is a story about loneliness–eternal loneliness–as well as the insatiable longing for ignorance and innocence in the wake of tragedy. Thanks to those who have already read and offered their critique. Comments are, as always, welcome.

Resorting to Bribery…

Attention timid freshmen: I’ve tried encouraging, cajoling, and nudging you gently into posting a comment or two on this blog–a good habit to develop, and one we’ll use for actual points when we start getting into literature next week.

Unfortunately, I am also familiar with freshman psychology:

Fish#1: You go first.
Fish #2: No, you go first.
Fish #1: No, you.
Fish #2: No, you.
Fish #1: Nobody else is doing it.
Fish #2: It must be “uncool.”
Fish #1: Yeah, anything teachers tell you to do must be uncool.

Alright already! If I must, to get this thing started, I’ll resort to bribery. The first one of my freshmen to make a comment on this post gets a bison buck. Make sure to include your name and period in the comment, and please try to say something original (as opposed to just “hi”).

Sorry Christina (Puga), you can’t play this one. But your cousin can…

Welcome Back and Here We Go!

A collective groan sounds accross the city of Dallas today, as thousands of teenagers abandon the freedom of summer for the shackles of secondary education. Well…at least until they actually get to school, see their long lost friends and have the following conversation:

Teen1: So. What’d you do this summer?
Teen2: Nothin’. You?
Teen1: Nothin’. It was boring.
Teen 2: Yeah.
Teen 1: So. You like your new classes?
Teen2: Nah, they’re all boring.
Teen1: Yeah, mine too. I can’t wait for next summer.
Teen2: Yeah. That’ll be fun.

Anyhow, welcome back students, parents, bloggers, and especially to my brand new freshmen. I hope you will find this website as useful as those who went before you did. Feel free to look around, check your assignments (links to the left), peruse some student blogs (links to the right), or click on the “comments” link at the bottom of this post to share your own thoughts. Who knows, you might even earn some ASK points.

Teen1: ASK points? What the heck are those?
Teen2: Dunno. Sounds boring to me…

Time’s up. Moving Day is Here.

There is no cause for panic. Blogs will go on, much will remain the same, and only your blog address will change.

Basically, for all those active bloggers on the “mrlocke.net” site who wish to continue your blog, here’s what you need to do:

1. Send me an email letting me know you plan to continue your blog.
2. I’ll email you back with instructions on how to move your blog to the new location.
3. Email me again as soon as you have successfully moved, and I will set up a “redirect” page at your old address that will automatically forward visitors to your new location.

Happy Blogging, and see you on the Sunsetap.net side!
