Live From San Antonio
We’re here at the historic Menger Hotel in downtown San Antonio–the rooms are an interesting Victorian-style decor, the hotel is right next-door to the Alamo, and is also supposedly haunted by ghosts! Amy enjoyed her first session with all of her fellow music teachers (like a few thousand of them, at least), and Grady is wide-eyed at all of the people. How was school today? [laughs like Nelson Munz: “ha, ha!”] I’ll post more tomorrow…

Bloggie from Baghdad
Hey bloggies (and bloggers), for those of you just getting started in this world of blogging, you’re not alone. A friend of mine passed on this link to me–it’s a 16 year-old kid from Iraq who just started his own blog. Drop by and give him a good Oak Cliff style greeting (no, not with guns or knives, although he’s probably familiar with that too) . Maybe you can figure out who has more homework–you or him…
Blogging makes the world a whole lot smaller, doesn’t it? (and maybe friendlier, too)

Long Weekend
Confession: I slept all day today, and am just now getting up this evening. And in a few hours, I’ll be going back to bed. With good reason of course–my head is throbbing and overstuffed with gunk, my voice is non-existent (except for an occasional coughing fit). And I’m determined to be at school tomorrow. Since I was out Friday for Academic Decathlon, I refuse to allow my wonderful students the luxury of a substitute two school days in a row!
Regional competition has come and gone, and another Acadec season is over–that is, assuming we didn’t make it to state. We’ll find out tomorrow, but I’m not holding my breath. Mostly because my breath is valuable to me at the moment, and somewhat difficult to come by. I shouldn’t complain, though–we had a few decathletes in the same condition as I, but they had to deliver speeches.
All in all, we did pretty well with the speeches and interviews: several 900’s this year. Unfortunately, none medalled. It’s always hard to walk away from competition without any medals, but at least we had the gratification of beating Townview TAG for a fourth straight competition in a row. Guess they aren’t as “talented and gifted” as they like to advertise.
Hmmm…getting sleepy. Again. Must finish blogging, grade a few papers, and then…lights out.

Little Bo-Peep
Ok, I promised I would post some more pictures of Grady soon, but I think I can do even better than that: here’s a short video I shot of him just this past weekend, fawning over Little Bo-Peep. As I mentioned in the last post, she is attached to his “play console” and he seems to have a crush on her. Notice how he alternates between reaching for her, and simultaneously pushing her beloved sheep away from her. Jealousy, I guess.
I’m not sure how compatible the video format is, so it may or may not work, depending on your media player. Here’s the link:
Enjoy!

Daddy & Grady Day
Yesterday I didn’t have school, and Amy did–so Grady and I got to hang out. Just the boys. We played on the floor, I threw him around some (he really likes that) and he played in his little play console. It’s one of those things they sit in that goes all around with toys attached to it. This one has a nursery rhyme theme–it has a clock with hickory the mouse running up and down it, little Bo Peep and some sheep, a cow jumping over a moon, and a little old lady in a shoe–but get this–she only has three children. I think that hardly qualifies as having “so many children she didn’t know what to do.” Unless it’s a reflection on suburban families who generally stop after two. Can’t handle that extra kid, huh? Anyhow, we think Grady has a crush on little Bo Peep. He’s fascinated by her.
All was going well until I took him to his doctor’s visit, where he was scheduled to receive FOUR shots. Poor kid. I have to admire the nurses, though–they had a good system down. It took two of them holding him, one on each side. They counted, “one, two, three” and both stuck him in each leg at the same time. He screamed almost instantly, but the bandaid went on in less than half a second, and it was “one, two, three” again, then the next round of shots. Eventually the poor child’s wails lessened, and I packed him back in the car and headed home. I had to sing him THREE songs (usually only takes one or two) to put him to sleep this time: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons, “With or Without You” by U2, and “Summer Eyes” by me. Good selection, huh?
When Mommy came home, she relieved Daddy so he could go play poker with some of his church friends (yes, I realize the irony). I had a good time (Texas Hold ‘Em, and I came in 7th place out of 15), except for the fact that I had been so busy with Grady that I had forgotten to eat anything the whole day. So I got to the poker party and pigged out on pure crap–soda, chips, M&M’s, and bean dip. I didn’t feel so good when I woke up this morning.
Just a side note/question: Anybody out there still play Dungeons and Dragons?

Brrrrrrrrr…
The pilot light on our house’s heating unit picked a winner of a time to go out. And stubbornly refuse to be relighted. We had some one from the yellow pages out to look at it last night, but I think he was more interested in selling us a new AC than repairing the old one. In the meantime, it’s sweaters, baby blankets, and space heaters for us.
The new “bloggies” are certainly underway–nine of them at last count. They still need a little bit of guidance and direction from some of you professionals out there. None have learned how to “modify” their blogs yet, and some are still sticking entirely to school related topics. Imagine that…
I’ve been toying with an idea…the next issue of the Bison Bits will be coming out sometime soon–it showcases the writing and art of Sunset students. Blogging is writing. Maybe some of you who have been doing this a long time can go back, find the best blog entry you ever made–some wise or funny or insightful thoughts or reflections on life or just about anything else–print it out, and submit it to the bison bits as a “blog entry.” A new kind of writing. Anyhow, just a thought.
