The Coming of the Great Silence

So summer is here, and I’m guessing we’re about to find out who blogs for the points, and who blogs for the sheer joy of blogging.

[A chorus of little voices says “oh, I’ll keep blogging, Mr. Locke!]

I hope so, but I’ve heard well-intentioned promises before. Perhaps it will be for the best, though. Blogging is really most likely to benefit those who do it voluntarily.

Speaking of summer, Mrs. Grimes has selected T.H. White’s Once and Future King as summer reading for students enrolled in English II Pre-AP. Since I’ve done so with your novels all year long, I thought about picking up a few copies at B&N or Half-Price book store, and making them available at my educator’s discount rate. Let me know if you’re interested.

Grendel Conferences–If you couldn’t tell from the last post, I’m really interested 1)in talking about Gardner’s Beowulf as a Christ-type. If you want something to talk about in your conference that could be interesting for both of us, read and tell me if you see what I’m seeing. I’m also really interested in 2)the character of Hrothulf, and his relationship with Red Horse, OR 3)the fourth priest in the chapter about the priests. There–free tips for bloggers. You know you’re special…

That was “one good weekend.”

Friday
1. Finished reading Beowulf vs. Grendel in class. What an awesome job I have, where I get to immerse myself in literature that I love.

2. Later that day performed in the talent show. Once again, I love my job. I get a huge office (with 20 desks), a closet full of toys, endless entertainment, summers off, and every now and then I even get to live out my childhood dream…you know, the whole “rock star” thing. Thanks to all my students who came to see me, you made me feel very special and cool, especially those of you with posters and loud screams…

3. That night, went out with Amy to movies. I just love going to the movies, and to tell the truth, it doesn’t even matter if the movie is great or horrible. It’s just the whole cultural experience. We saw “Mean Girls,” and it was actually pretty funny. And very scary. My first thought afterwards was, “typical, spoiled, rich, white girls,” but then I thought about that for a minute. Nope. Here at un-rich, un-spoiled, un-white Sunset you find the same social heirarchy, the same “clicks,” and the same MEAN GIRLS! Noemi, you may be right about boys being stupid. But girls are mean. Well, all except for my wife, that is [looks over his shoulder in fear]. Still, going to the movies is great. Yay popcorn!

Saturday
1. Got up early, and finally mowed the four-foot-tall, weed-infested, #%#@# yard! Even though I hate yard-work, it’s still a great feeling when it’s all done, and I don’t have to feel the cold stares of disapproving neighbors on my back (at least for another week).

2. Got new, free laptop from DISD! It’s about time. I’m blogging on it right now. It looks just like my old one, too (the one with a stupid piece of broken plastic that rendered the entire laptop useless). Maybe this one will avoid the fate of its predecessor. It’s good to be mobile again.

3. Finished re-reading Grendel. What a great novel. And in Gardner’s version, the character of Beowulf is *definitely* a Christ-type. I suspected it last time I read the novel, but I’m sure of it now. Grendel, then, of course, represents the depravity of “fallen man.” Puts everything in a whole new light.

4. Avril Lavigne on Saturday Night Live. Ok, fine, yes, I like Avril Lavigne, so just shut up already. She has a great voice, and she makes Britney Spears and Christina Aguillera look like cheap sluts who don’t even have enough talent to play an instrument. She’s original. And her new CD comes out the 25th.

Sunday
1. Mother’s day, and I’m such a good boy. I sent my mother a card and a book she wanted, AND I got a present for Amy–her very first mother’s day present from me and the baby.

2. Amy’s college roomate and her husband, Ami and Jeff Brown, are driving through Dallas tomorrow (actually since it’s now 1:11am, I guess that’s today), and we’ll get to visit with them. Jeff is a really cool guy, who plays guitar better than I even wish I could, and we don’t get to seem them often enough.

3. Summer approacheth. Life is good.

Old Friends, New Friends

At 6:05 in the morning, I think this is the earliest I’ve ever blogged. That’s what I get for dropping everything I was “supposed” to do last night and watching the “Friends” Finale instead. Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m not supposed to be the kind of person swayed by yuppie-television-media-hype-sentimentality. It was a good show though, perhaps because it always stuck to really basic, simple, universal subjects: friendship, love, laughter–throw in a few break-ups, make-ups, weddings, babies, and airports, and I can see why it was successful. That and coming at a crucial developmental time in our (my generation) lives. It started in 1994, when I started college, ran through my own break-ups, make ups, airports, and ends in 2004 as Amy and I are about to welcome our first child into the world. Sound familiar? Something else, too–the first time I ever heard about the show (and perhaps the reason I started watching) was from John Fieghery–one of my “best friends.”

Sniffle.

Ok, that’s enough of that. On the bright side, this little community of blogging “friends” is growing at incredible pace. Welcome two new bloggies: Elizabeth and Melissa. May their shows last even longer than ten years…

With or Without You (Coming Friday)

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you…

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait…without you.

With or without you, with or without you.

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all, but I want more
And I’m waiting for you

With or without you, with or without you
I can’t live…with or without you

My hands are tied, my body bruised
She got me with nothing to win
And nothing left to lose…

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give,
And you give yourself away

With or without you, with or without you
I can’t live…with or without you.

Yeah, we’ll shine like stars on a summer night
We’ll shine like stars on a winter night
One heart, one hope, one love,

With or without you, with or without you
I can’t live…with or without you.

Now Taking Requests…

Ok. Teacher talent show rapidly approaching. Next Friday. Notice creative use of frags. Only acceptable after you know the rule.

Anyhow, hopefully this time they won’t make me start playing before everyone gets to the auditorium. My tradition in past years has been to play something I wrote for the first show (which I did, even if you missed it), and then to cover some other song for the second one. Last year I did “Can’t Take My Eyes of You” by Frankie Valley Four Seasons (the song from “Ten Things I Hate About You”). Following is a list of songs I’m considering–I’ll entertain suggestions not on the list, but chances are unless you’re my age, I’m not going to know your song well enough to play by next Friday. Or want to. Unless I like your taste in music. Which is not too likely.

1. “Living on a Prayer” -Bon Jovi
2. “Lovesong” –The Cure (NOT 311)
3. “Friday I’m in Love” –The Cure
4. “Two Princes” –Spin Doctors (This one is my favorite so far)
5. “There She Goes” –The La’s
6. “With or Without You –U2
7. “Politik” –Coldplay
8. “Heaven Isn’t Too Far Away” –Warrant
9. “Desperado” –The Eagles
10. “When I See You Smile” –Bad English (how ironic)

Yes, I know–they’re mostly 80’s songs. What did you expect? Let me know if you see one you want to hear.

Locke Epic: Part II (prose summary)

Unfortunately, the manuscript for the second half of the epic referenced in the previous post has never been discovered, although rumour holds it to have been damaged beyond recognition in a great fire sometime during the 14th Century, much like its apparent inspiration, the Beowulf epic.

However, from all accounts, the gist of it is that the twins graduated in all their academic glory, family and friends alike hailed their intellectual prowess, and the two graduates began hasty departure preparations for an even greater journey accross the great ocean to the ancient lands of Europe for a month or so. They also made plans to reunite with the poet (older brother) later that summer for an adventure exporing the famed Apalachian trail in Tennessee.

The poet himself returned home in the great sky-boat to his beautiful, much-missed, baby-filled wife, where he will continue to dole out rewards and punishments (grades) to his legions of mighty (and not-so-mighty) warrior-students in the legendary portable mead-hall #17. May the epic go ever on…

Locke Epic: Part I

So. Thus starts my sky-journey,
Early boarding onto this bird of steel.
No morning sleep for Mr. Locke!
Cramped seating and cold cushions
Are little comfort. Leaving ground-friends
And beautiful, baby-filled wife sadly behind,
Like book legends–Beowulf and Odysseus–
I venture forth in winged vessel,
Sailing the cloud-sea in search of adventure.
Well. More truthfully to tell, I travel chiefly
For brainy brothers whose baccelaureate service
And graduation festivities fetch together family
For one good weekend. A wonderful thing
To see and celebrate the sibling-twins
With honor and praise. Older brother is proud.
